There is something especially sweet about photographing newborn twins. Two tiny babies, two completely individual little personalities, and the beginning of a bond their family will get to watch grow for years to come.
For this newborn twin session, I welcomed two beautiful baby boys and their parents into my home studio near Indianapolis. We kept the session soft and simple, focusing on the connection between the boys and creating photographs their parents can look back on long after these tiny newborn days have passed.
Photographing Twin Newborns Together
One of my favorite parts of photographing twins is creating images of them snuggled together. After spending so many months side by side, twins often seem perfectly content curled up close to one another. During this session, we created several wrapped images that allowed the boys to stay cozy while still capturing all of those tiny newborn details.
One of my favorite setups from their session was a special heart-shaped wrapped portrait of the two boys together. It was such a simple, meaningful way to photograph them during this fleeting stage — tiny enough to fit together inside the shape of a heart.
These are the kinds of photographs that become even more special over time.
A Touch of Warm Mustard Yellow
We also used a beautiful mustard yellow wrap for part of the session. I love incorporating warm, earthy colors into newborn portraits because they keep the focus on baby while adding just enough warmth and personality to the finished images. With twins, coordinating the babies rather than making every detail identical can also create a timeless look that still allows each little one to shine.
Wrapped together in the mustard tones, these two looked especially sweet nestled beside each other.
Celebrating Each Twin as an Individual
As much as I love photographing twins together, there is something equally important to me about creating individual portraits of each baby.
Twins share such a special connection, and throughout their childhood, they'll often be introduced together, talked about together, and photographed together. That's a beautiful part of their story, and one I love celebrating. But they're also two unique little people, each deserving of photographs that are entirely their own.
That's why, when I'm planning a twin newborn session, I don't just prepare setups for photographing the babies together. I always make sure to have individual setups ready for each baby, too.
For these sweet boys, we created individual portraits in soft olive green and dusty blue. The colors complemented each other beautifully while giving each baby his own special collection of photographs. From their tiny features to their peaceful sleeping expressions, I wanted to capture the little details that make each of them unique.
Someday, these brothers will have beautiful portraits of themselves together, showing the bond they've shared since the very beginning. But they'll also have photographs of themselves individually — little heirlooms that remind them that even though they came into this world together, each of them has always been someone worth celebrating all on his own.
And I think that's something every child deserves.
Including Mom and Dad in Twin Newborn Photos
Newborn sessions aren't only about photographing your babies. I always encourage parents to step into the photographs, too — even when being photographed may be the last thing on your mind in those early weeks.
Some of my favorite images from this twin newborn session were the photographs of both boys wrapped together in their parents' arms. Seeing just how tiny they were against Mom and Dad is something that simply can't be recreated later.
Your babies will never be this small again, and someday these photographs will show them what it looked like when they could both fit so easily into your arms. Parent photographs don't need to feel formal or complicated. The goal is simply to preserve the connection, the closeness and this particular season of your family's story.
A Calm Newborn Photography Experience
When you're bringing two newborns anywhere, even the idea of a photo session can feel like a lot. My newborn sessions are intentionally relaxed and baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding, soothing, cuddling and taking breaks whenever they're needed. There is no expectation that babies will sleep perfectly or follow a schedule.
That patience was something this family appreciated after their session:
“We had such a great experience with our newborn photos! She was so sweet and patient with our babies, and the pictures turned out beautiful. We’re so happy with how everything came out! 100% recommended!!!!”
For me, creating beautiful newborn portraits is only one part of the experience. I want parents to feel cared for, comfortable and able to enjoy watching these little moments unfold.
